Research and Development through WeCWIIS Postgraduate Guidance

As a postgraduate student, seeking resources from a library is only the beginning; remember that the journey toward knowledge often requires support beyond supervisors.

Research and professional development involve continuous learning, reflection, and problem-solving. People at different stages may need different kinds of support. Some may need an overview of a particular research topic, while others may benefit from practical activities or individual guidance related to their own research.

WeCWI Integrated Solutions (WeCWIIS) provides Research and Development guidance to support postgraduate students, researchers, educators, and professionals in developing their research knowledge and skills. The guidance addresses specific learning needs through three approaches: webinars, workshops, and coaching.

A. Guidance

WeCWIIS Research & Development guidance is conducted online via Google Meet, allowing participants to join from anywhere. This online arrangement provides a convenient setting for discussion, explanation, practical activities, and individual consultation. All guidance types are available on demand. Participants may therefore request guidance based on their current research stage, learning needs, or specific areas requiring attention, rather than following a fixed course schedule.

Because research knowledge and skills often require progressive development, we recommend at least two sessions for optimal learning. The first session may identify needs, discuss key concepts, or introduce relevant approaches, while subsequent sessions can focus on application, progress, feedback, and further improvement.

The scope and content of each session may be adapted to the selected topic and the participant's needs. For individual coaching, participants may also provide relevant materials such as research proposals, thesis chapters, progress reports, presentation slides, manuscripts, research instruments, ethical clearance documents, or supervisors' comments for discussion.

B. Types

a. Webinar

A webinar uses a lecture-based delivery approach and is intended for groups of more than ten participants. This format is ideal for participants seeking clear and organised explanations or a comprehensive overview of a specific research-related topic. It promotes understanding and facilitates engagement with the material.

The facilitator may systematically introduce concepts, principles, procedures, examples, or current practices. A webinar is particularly useful for developing general awareness and understanding among a larger group before participants apply the knowledge in their own research contexts.

b. Workshop

A workshop uses a hands-on delivery approach and may include multiple participants. The emphasis is on active participation and application. Participants may work with examples, complete research-related activities, analyse materials, develop research components, or practise particular skills during the session.

For example, a workshop may involve identifying research gaps, developing research questions, constructing conceptual frameworks, analysing journal articles, designing research instruments, or preparing academic presentations. The facilitator explains and provides feedback while participants apply relevant concepts to practical activities.

c. Coaching

Coaching uses a tutoring approach and is conducted with one participant. This format provides individualised guidance based on the participant's specific research needs, progress, or difficulties. Unlike a webinar or workshop, coaching lets the discussion focus directly on the participant's research context.

A coaching session may involve reviewing and discussing a research proposal, thesis chapter, research framework, methodology, instrument, progress report, journal manuscript, presentation, ethical clearance requirement, viva preparation, or other research-related matter.

The facilitator may provide explanations, questions, feedback, examples, and recommendations to help the participant understand the issue and determine appropriate ways forward. Coaching supports the participant's learning and research development but does not replace the role of a research supervisor or the institution's requirements.

C. Topics

WeCWIIS postgraduate guidance covers the postgraduate research journey, from developing a research idea to thesis completion, publication, and viva voce preparation. 36 topics were identified to provide broad and systematic coverage of the key knowledge, skills, processes, and academic milestones commonly encountered during postgraduate study and research.

Postgraduate research is not a single activity but a sequence of interrelated tasks. A student may begin by identifying a research gap and selecting an appropriate supervisor, then proceed to proposal development, ethical clearance, research design, instrument development, data collection, analysis, thesis writing, publication, presentation, viva voce, and subsequent corrections. Difficulties at any stage may affect progress later.

The 36 topics therefore address the research journey from several complementary perspectives. First, they cover research planning and direction, including identifying research gaps, formulating problem statements, developing research questions, establishing theoretical and conceptual frameworks, and preparing research proposals.

Next, they address research methodology and implementation, including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods designs, sampling, instrument development, pilot studies, ethical clearance, and data collection. Third, they support academic reading and writing, including literature review, synthesis, paraphrasing, citation, academic style, and the writing of major thesis chapters.

Then, they address research communication and dissemination, including academic presentations, journal publication, proposal defence, viva voce preparation, and thesis corrections. Finally, several topics focus on research management and postgraduate progression, such as finding and working effectively with supervisors, preparing progress reports, and using academic resources efficiently.

Taken together, the 36 topics provide a comprehensive but flexible framework for Research and Development guidance. They are not meant to suggest that every participant must complete all 36 topics. Instead, participants may select the areas most relevant to their current stage, identified weaknesses, institutional requirements, or immediate research needs.

This structure also supports postgraduate students working toward timely completion or Graduate on Time (G.O.T.), because it allows them to identify and address specific research difficulties before they become barriers to progress. The available topics are as follows:

These topics are not intended to form a compulsory sequence. Participants may select a topic according to their current research stage and identified needs. For example, researchers at the beginning of their studies may focus on identifying a research gap, developing a problem statement, formulating research questions, or preparing a research proposal. Those undertaking their studies may require guidance on methodology, ethical clearance, sampling, instrument development, data collection, or thesis writing.

Participants approaching completion may focus on publication, academic presentation, viva voce preparation, or thesis corrections. The same topic may also be approached differently according to the selected guidance type. A webinar can provide an overview, a workshop can provide opportunities for practical application, and coaching can focus on applying the relevant knowledge to an individual's own research.

D. Scope

WeCWIIS Research & Development guidance is intended to strengthen participants' research knowledge, skills, and ability to make informed academic decisions. Guidance may include explanations, discussions, questioning, examples, practical activities, feedback, reviews, and recommendations for improvement.

Participants remain responsible for their own research decisions, data, analysis, interpretation, writing, submissions, and compliance with institutional requirements. For postgraduate researchers, WeCWIIS guidance complements the formal supervision provided by their universities. The participant’s supervisor and relevant academic authorities take precedence.

Participants can choose the guidance format that best fits their learning needs through webinars, workshops, and coaching sessions. This flexible approach to Research and Development allows individuals to first understand the material, then apply it, and, if needed, discuss it through personalised tutoring.
