An informative speech is designed to convey knowledge and understanding about a particular topic. Generally, it covers objects, processes, events, and concepts. Object speech covers anything visible, tangible, and stable in form. Process speech refers to systematic series of actions leading to a specific result. Event speech includes anything that happens or is regarded as happening. Lastly, concept speech is about the belief, theory, idea, notion, and principle.
In delivering an informative speech, you must take a neutral position. In other words, you must educate and enlighten the audience instead of persuading them to agree with your opinion about a controversial topic. Your intention must not try to get the listeners to take immediate action due to your speech. Particularly, merely using the phrase to inform in your speech does not make your speech informative if your actual intention is persuading your audience to agree with your point of view.
Do not overestimate what the audience knows; instead, relate the subject to the audience. Avoid being too technical and abstract. Personalise your ideas and be creative. When looking for an informative speech topic, the presenter must gather the materials from online and offline resources including personal interest, knowledge, and experience. Besides, ask yourself the following questions to determine the right topic for your speech.
Have you chosen a topic that's appropriate for your audience?
Would it be too technical and specialised for a general audience?
Would it be too trivial for a college-level audience?
What is your real intention?
Have you chosen a topic that is narrow enough to allow you to cover it in-depth in a 5-minute speech (for example)?
Have you chosen a topic that will present new information?
Have you told us something we do not already know?
Have you chosen a good and snappy title for your speech?
Below are the 50 suggested topics for an informative speech. You may consider limiting its scope by adding one of the keywords like types, benefits, advantages, disadvantages, causes, opportunities, drawbacks, consequences, impacts, effects, ways, or solutions as part of your title. By adding these keywords, the scope of the topic will be limited to what the keyword conveys in the title. Be noted that the bold-faced fonts are the replaceable keywords, which can serve as other informative speech topics.
